In 1854, Joseph Leidy, an grest American paleontologist, named the genus Arctodus based on fossils. Because the short faced bear has a shorter face than today's bears, with wide cheeks and short snout, it has a more vivid name "short faced bear". In 1879, the famous paleontologist Edward Drinker Cope named the second species of the short faced bear: the giant short faced bear (Arctodus simus), which is larger and stronger as the name suggests.
Arctodus simus is the largest carnivorous mammal that ever lived in North America. The largest Arctodus simus ever found has a standing height of 4 meters and a weight of more than 1 ton. It is larger than today's brown bears and polar bears.
Strong bones and muscles enable Arctodus simus to have a strong biting force. The most conspicuous two pairs of thick and curved canine teeth, which have strong lethality. Arctodus simus has an orbital aperture twice the diameter of a brown bear, indicating that it has excellent vision. Arctodus simus also has large nostrils, which have a good sense of smell of bears.
Arctodus simus has a strong body and surprisingly long limbs. Due to its straight pace, its long limbs give it faster speed and better endurance when running.
Arctodus simus mainly lives in the open plains, because it can kill strong bison alone, which is also known as "bull eating bear". Arctodus simus even attacks mammoth cubs and kills megatherium, which is as big as an elephant. Arctodus simus' diet covers almost all herbivores in North America.
