INFORMATION
A new Godzilla model has been added to the ARTPLA SCULPTURE WORKS series, which brings you masterpieces in plastic kit form! The original model was created by Shinobu Matsumura, a leading figure in natural history and biological modeling. Using promotional stills from the 1954 release of Godzilla as a starting point, the essence of various Godzillas from over 70 years has been reconstructed and recreated. Rather than recreating a suit or CG, the figure depicts the appearance of a giant ancient creature in Tokyo in 3D. The collapsed Nichigeki Building and the elevated Japanese National Railways at the base of the statue, as well as the pose of the statue grabbing a train in its mouth, add to the sense of realism.
Matsumura's soulful sculpture is condensed into a fixed-pose plastic kit with a total of eight runners. The organic yet complex surface details of the body are reproduced without leaving anything out from the original model. Despite the complex division, the structure used in the previously released series, in which the surface parts of the body are attached to the base body, ensures sturdiness. The fitting of the parts, which is a challenge with this method, is molded with high precision, and the parting lines are not noticeable. The assembly itself is enjoyable, and once completed, it becomes an ornament that can withstand display even in its unpainted, unassembled state. Of course, if you choose to paint it, the combination of the gigantic creature Godzilla and the collapsed structure will inspire your imagination.
Painted example by Shinobu Matsumura
Godzilla (1954) is often depicted in brown or gray, like the image in movie posters, unlike the black color of most of the Godzillas that followed, but this time I chose a reddish-brown color that would suit the burning city. The area around Yurakucho Station, where the base is located, still retains a lot of the atmosphere of the time, except for Nichigeki Theater, so I painted it with that image in mind.
