The Fourth Doctor appeared in 172 episodes (179 counting the regeneration in Planet of the Spiders and the unfinished Shada) over a period of seven years, from 1974 to 1981. This makes him the longest-running On-Screen Doctor of both series. He also appeared in the 1983 The Five Doctors specials (via Shada's unreleased archive footage) and made his final appearance in the 1993 Dimensions in Time charity special.
This incarnation is generally considered the most recognizable of Doctors and one of the most popular, especially in the United States.
